Wireless | Wireless Project
Networking and Telecommunications services has upgrade the wireless network around Portland State to include the majority of the PSU campus and the Park Blocks from Lincoln Hall to Millar Library. Click here for a full list of coverage. Our goal is to provide free, reliable wireless internet to all PSU faculty, staff and students. Click here for more details about the changes we have made and how these affect you.
The wireless upgrades will provide better service than the previous wireless network. These changes will also include other SSID's ("Wireless Networks") that will be available.
Some users will have to change SSIDs, and VPN users may have to adjust VPN settings. Users should contact the Help Desk at 503-725-4357 if they require assistance.
Only if you are using a PDA (Palm or Pocket PC). Previously, PSU used wireless MAC address registration to provide some security to the wireless network. That system has been replaced by our current web-based authentication system. You do not need to register your MAC address for laptop or desktop computers--all you need is a properly configured wireless client and a PSU Computer Account or guest wireless account. If you wish to use a Palm or Pocket PC device on our wireless network, you will need to register the MAC address of the PDA's wireless NIC. Stop by the Help Desk (Smith Memorial Student Union, room 18) with your PDA and we'll create a request of MAC registration. Please note that we are transitioning to a separate SSID "macnet.pdx.edu" for all PDA users with registered MAC addresses.
PSU uses a wireless networking standard known as IEEE 802.11b or Wi-Fi This standard is platform independent and works for all major operating systems. Each computer on the wireless network communicates through an installed 802.11b wireless networking card via radio waves to established access points located on campus. These access points are connected to the wired network.
The wireless SSID is PubNet (there is no WEP or security enabled). Once you connect to the network, open a web browser and you will be redirected to the login site called “Chillispot”. Use your PSU Odin user name and password to authenticate.
If you are a student, faculty, or staff member at PSU, you are encouraged to obtain a PSU Computer Account by visiting https://www.account.pdx.edu and following the steps to create your PSU Computer Account. If you are visiting for a short period of time and need only wireless access, you may visit User Support Services in Smith Memorial Student Union room 18, and they can create a temporary guest wireless account for you. This account will not provide dial-up, email, or any other service than access to the wireless network. Your username will be of the form username@guest, and you will be required to type the "@guest" when logging in to the wireless network.
Wireless networking gives you the freedom to sit where you want while still having access to networking resources such as web browsing, email, etc. The wireless network allows you to do the same things as the wired network: browse the web while at the Millar Library (north side of second, third, and fourth floors); read, send and receive email while sitting in the park blocks near SMSU; attend WebCT courses while sitting at the Food Court in Smith Memorial Student Union (SMSU).
